With the boom in popularity that Vocaloid had, it's no surprise fans would want to experiment with the software themselves! UTAU (the Japanese verb for "to sing") is a shareware-based singing synthesizer program created by Ameya/Ayame in 2008. Anyone can make their own voicebank by recording their own voice! These voicebanks are known as UTAUloids.
Kasane Teto (重音テト)
- Voice Provider: Mayo Oyamano
- First Release: April 1, 2008
- Gender: Chimera
- Age: 31
- Character Item: French Baguette
Originally an April Fool's joke, Kasane Teto is the most popular and well-known UTAUloid. So much so that she now has an official voicebank through SynthV!
Despite how amazing SynthV Teto sounds, her UTAU voice bank will always have a special place in my heart.
BEST OF TETO
Song of the Eared Robot - nwp8861
Kasane Territory - oxi (parody of a Touhou song by ZUN and bit)
Mischievous Function - Gojimaji-P
Other UTAUloids I like!
Namine Ritsu (波音リツ)
Ritsu was also originally a "joke" vocaloid like Teto, but her voice bank is absolutley amazing. She has such a powerful and fluid voice- I think she honestly sounds better than the professional vocaloids of her time. (I'd love to see Ritsu get a SynthV voicebank too!!) Stomache Book and Error are some of her best. I also really like this cover of Shotgun Lovers. Just don't read the comments on any videos featuring her.
Anna Nyui (暗鳴ニュイ)
Anna Nyui is another really awesome vb. There aren't a lot of original songs featuring her that I've found, but this cover of SPiCa is stellar. (As much as I love Miku, she just doesn't do this song justice.)
Uta Utane (唄音ウタ)/Defoko (デフォ子)
Defoko is the UTAU software's default voicebank. She isn't used all that frequently- I think the fact that she's "default" makes her seem kind of boring to a lot of people. Also, her voice is very robotic and artifical sounding- her samples come from a Japanese voice synthesis software and not a person. But...I find that incredibly cool!! I really enjoy the robotic sound...it's part of the appeal vocaloid and UTAU have to me. ANYWAYS. Like Anna Nyui, there aren't a ton of original Defoko songs, but there are some awesome covers out there. This cover of OTOMEROID is one of my favorites.
